In this Historical Fiction novel set in 1849, in the years prior to the civil war, Dorthea and her family are forced to move in with there stingy uncle Jacob. A terrible flood destroyed the family's farm earlier that year. Dorthea was a hard working, independant character, the whole book revolving around her. Dorthea's uncle, Jacob, asks Dorthea to make a special quilt for him, saying that he wants it to resemble his mother's. But with it's odd shapes and patterns, the quilt looks more like a big mess. She soon learns that the Quilt has other purposes, a secret that that uncle Jacob had been keeping for to long.
